YK:n korkean tason kestävän kehityksen poliittinen foorumi tai tuttavallisemmin HLPF (High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development) on vuosittain kesällä YK:n päämajassa New Yorkissa järjestettävä foorumi, jossa seurataan jäsenmaiden kestävää kehitystä. Jokaisella maalla on vuorotellen mahdollisuus esitellä raporttinsa kehityksestään, ja tänä vuonna Suomi on yksi esittelyvuorossa olevista maista.

Nuorisodelegaatin näkökulmasta HLPF on usein kiireinen tapahtuma, jossa pääsee edustamaan Suomen nuoria korkean tason YK-foorumissa ja tekemään yhteistyötä muiden maiden nuorisodelegaattien kanssa. Tänä vuonna tapahtumaan tulikin vielä yksi lisäelementti: koronatilanteen vuoksi ensimmäistä kertaa koskaan HLPF on siirretty täysin verkkoon. Foorumi järjestettiin kuitenkin New Yorkin ajassa, joten useat tapahtumat ovat meidän näkökulmastamme yöaikaan.

Suomen edustajana sain mahdollisuuden pitää Suomen puheen sessiossa Protecting the planet and building resilience. Voit lukea puheen kokonaisuudessaan alta:

Thank you chair.

Excellences, distinguished delegates.

My name is Sofia Savonen. I am the Youth Delegate of Finland and Chair of the Finnish 2030 Agenda Youth Group. Our group works tirelessly to support the government to take action towards reaching the sustainable development goals.

Dear friends.

To tackle the rapid loss of biodiversity and changes in climate we must be bold enough to speak of these things truthfully, and with correct definitions. We are in a crisis; we can no longer hide behind words or turn our backs.

The Finnish government is committed to making Finland climate neutral by 2035 and aims to invest into halting biodiversity loss. These are great objectives but useful only when put into practice on a large scale.

There is not one country that could solve these challenges alone. We must work together and involve those affected the most and who have the least power, so that we can find the right solutions. Indigenous peoples and young people need to be involved every step of the way.

The topic of this session takes us to the core of tackling global crises. It is also at the core of the current Covid-19 crisis. In order to avoid future pandemics it is necessary to address their root causes, that is, destruction of natural habitats and wildlife trade.

These global crises cannot be left for the next generation to solve. I call all of you to take action today to ensure the well-being of tomorrow.

Thank you for your attention.

Sofia Savonen, Suomen HLPF-nuorisodelegaatti
